I’ve been a big guy my entire life, and if the truth is known, most of the time, I wish I were among the regular common-sized guy. It wasn’t always fun being the guy to schlep the books on the book committee or being the guy who seemed always to be called on to take out the trash. However, there were several occasions when being extra large had its benefits and pleasures.

One of these occasions was being drafted to play the part of Santa Claus. I became such a popular Santa that I had purchased two or three elaborate…

About thirty years ago or so, after my second divorce, I took off for a long weekend with my son and youngest daughter to our condo in beautiful Destin, Florida. Destin is known for its magnificent white beaches and sensational turquoise gulf waters. The town is located dead south of Montgomery, Alabama, on the panhandle of Florida and was a favorite vacation spot for folks from New Orleans and Atlanta. I loved going there.

Aside from the natural beauty, we had a very nice water view condo on the fifth hole of the Surfside Golf Club. Even though it was…

Several years ago, I received an email from a girl I went to high school and college. When we were in Asbury Park High School, Sharon was adorable and very popular. She was a cheerleader and member of the most popular girl’s club – one of the movers and shaker groups of elite girls. I was always fond of her, but she wasn’t my type as a girl to date. Just being friends was good enough for me. By the way, Sharon was an above-average athlete too.

While at Murray State Sharon started dating one of the guys on the…

LITTLE RED CORVETTE

One of my old friends and fellow writers wrote a cute article yesterday about his grandson and a battery-powered 1958 Chevy Corvette. The accompanying photo reminded me of another old buddy from Asbury Park High School who had the same model in the same color but only in real life. Henry was given his Corvette as a graduation gift from high school by his dad. That car was Henry’s pride and joy, and as of my last conversation with him, he still had it. That makes it a pretty old and valuable Corvette.

Henry Vaccaro is one…

The tourists are here; the tourists are here. They are here, and you can’t get away from them. They never stop, and they won’t leave. They are crazy, and they are driving us crazy.

We live in Hilton Head, SC. The island is about an hour north of Savannah and about two hours south of Charleston. Interestingly we are also across Port Royal sound from Parris Island, the Marine training ground.

Hilton Head is a resort and retirement sanctuary. Over forty golf courses, several world-class tennis centers, and twelve miles of beautiful beaches. At one time, it was used as…

When I was nine years old, my family relocated to Long Branch, NJ, from Queens, NY. Long Branch was a medium-sized town on the shore mostly known as a resort for the people from New York. Our house was located in the west end in the city, about two hundred yards from the ocean. It was a small, two-bedroom house with one bathroom. A typical Cape Cod-style residence could have been considered a beach house, except it, was meant as a year-round home. Very bare bones.

Down the street on the ocean was a hotel called the Vendome Plaza. It…

EVERY RAFFLE MUST HAVE A WINNER

Lately, I’ve noticed a new advertising blitz on TV relating to Domino's Pizza. The ad states that if you arrive to pick up your pizza and it isn’t delivered to your car within 2 minutes of its completion, Domino’s will give you a free Pizza. After watching and analyzing the ad, I realized just how stupid Domino’s believes the public is. Think about what they are saying. The ad brought back some memories I had during the early days of my career.

At one time, I had a wholesale distributor client in New Haven…

At one time, I was employed by US Rubber – Uniroyal. At the time, Uniroyal was one of the largest companies in America, and they were known for being a colossal chemical and rubber product manufacturer. They were known primarily for being a tire manufacturer. Secondary businesses included many consumer products such as US Keds sneakers, US Koylon Mattresses, Royal Vinyl Carpet, Carpet Cushion, Naugahyde, Polypropylene Yarn, and Clothing. Uniroyal was just huge and marketed their products internationally.

Each product category had its marketing and sales division and, in many cases, operated autonomously. …

A few days ago, one of our supplier sales reps gave me a call to inform us that she was leaving our area and that she had taken a new position with one of her competitors. Joyce had been calling on us for several years, and I was surprised to hear of her change.

Our discussion reminded me of my early days when I decided to look for a selling position in New York City. I was all of 21 and didn’t quite know the ropes or where to start. …

A week or so ago, I wrote a story about a wonderful guy I went to high school with at Asbury Park High School. Moon was the manager of our football team and was responsible for caring for our needs. One of his duties was to bring a bucket of water to us during timeouts and practice sessions when we were so needy of drink during those hot and dusty days on the field of battle.

Most people would find this task somewhat unimportant, but to me, it was of major significance on those miserable heated days. I always equate…
